Christian Counseling Service
Our faith sustains us. Sometimes, when we are met with life’s challenges, faith alone is not enough to see us through. It’s at those times that an experienced counselor who understands both your secular concerns and how your faith plays into the resolution of those concerns can help. At Amy Wine Counseling Center, our counselors are specifically trained in Christian counseling, and ready to meet the demands of balancing your daily burdens with the blessing of your faith.
What’s the Difference?
All counseling, secular or Christian, has one intention: to help people set aside their struggles and overcome their challenges, all the while finding meaning and joy in life. Christian and secular counseling, however, differ in one significant way. Secular counseling relies on psychological principles and different methods for achieving more positive outcomes. Christian counseling trusts itself to the intertwining of the traditions of faith and the disciplines of psychology to promote not only psychological but spiritual, health.
Another difference between Christian counseling and secular counseling is that secular counseling relies primarily on theory and conjecture. Christian counseling, on the other hand, relies on the absolute of Scripture as a point of reference for working through the challenges you may be facing. Christian counselors use biblical teaching to inform how they approach what’s troubling you and bring it to resolution.
Like other forms of therapy, Christian counseling recognizes the importance of supporting your mental and emotional health. It also takes into account the symptoms that may lead to a traditional diagnosis of your concerns. In addition, like secular counseling, Christian counseling uses self-auditing and introspection to guide the therapeutic process. Christian counseling, however, goes one step further, in its recognition that traditional therapy methods may not provide a comprehensive picture of your experience. With an added focus on your spiritual health and personal relationship with God, Christian counseling stays grounded in the belief that your personal problems, emotional stresses and mental health concerns can be reframed through your faith. Your struggle can be replaced with a renewed sense of self-worth and spiritual fulfillment.
Standard of Accountability
One of the great truths informing the success of all therapy is that the client does the work. It’s not enough to show up every week and recap with your therapist. It’s about taking the tools, strategies, and counsel that happen in the consulting room and taking it out into the world. One of the reasons secular counseling falls short for many people is that there is no standard of accountability other than that set by the counselor.
Christian counseling relies on the standard set by Scripture and, as a client, holds you not to some arbitrary and sometimes flexible secular standard, but the standard of holy writ. The Christian counselors at Amy Wine Counseling Center understand the Bible holds a great deal of practical wisdom about human nature and human suffering, marriage, family and more. Using biblical concepts in therapy, our counselors can support you in understanding the direction you can take and also hold you accountable to those teachings. “Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors.” Psalms 119:24.
