The end of a relationship is complicated. In some way or another your future, present, and past have collided together all at once. There are many reasons people break up, however, the breakup process is similar for everyone. A lot of people experience their break up in different stages.

Confused

The initial stage of a breakup is confusion. It is very normal when a relationship is over to search for answers and wonder what you could have done different. You wonder why your relationship ended or how it took a turn toward separation.

Denial

The next stage is denial. During this stage it is difficult to believe that the relationship is over. It is common for people to feel like the relationship can be salvaged.

Bargaining

During the bargaining stage, it is common to take on all the relationship problems as your own. People in this stage are willing to do anything to return to their past relationship.

Relapse

It is important for people to understand that wanting to go back to their past relationship is normal. Don’t be surprised if you actually reach out to your ex and want to work things out. In some instances, this happens more than a few times.

Anger

It is normal to be angry after experiencing the mental, emotional, and social difficulties that go along with breaking up with someone. People in this stage are angry with themselves, their ex-partner, and the world.

Accepting

After some time, people gain acceptance about the breakup. They come to an understanding that their relationship is over and they have to move forward.

Looking forward to the future

People learn to live in the present without their ex-partner and look forward to future love.
